Willow decoction against the flu

We thank an anonymous user for his comment on flu remedies where he suggests the use of willow.
Here we suggest willow bark decoction which produces salicin, the same agent of aspirin.
Therefore it’s an antipyretic, antirheumatic and analgesic remedy.
It is effective in case of flu but also of migraines.

Garlic natural antibiotic properties

After big meals, chewing some pieces of garlic can be a remedy if you feel bloated and nauseated. The effect is assured but the odour in your mouth will last for some hours.

Garlic is then a potent natural antibiotic: the principles of garlic kill viruses and let body necessary bacteria untouched. Actually it’s very helpful to prevent and treat the early symptoms of flu, cold and sore throat.

Rubbing garlic on the skin helps against swelling and insect stings pain, but it’s also a way to prevent them.
If repeatedly rubbed on the skin, it allows a rapid healing of spots and injuries.

A common purifying remedy with sorrel

Garden sorrel, simply called sorrel (acetosa), is used to treat the skin for its purifying and remineralizing action; roots, leaves and stalks are the parts used.
Its leaves can also be used to flavour food, such as meat, fish, tomatoes, lentils, eggs, potatoes…
Do not cook sorrel into iron pots.

Sorrel is not recommended for people suffering from gout, arthritis and rheumatisms.

Infusion to treat acne: 20 g (0.70 oz) of fresh leaves in 1 l of boiling hot water for 10 minutes. Drink a cup in the morning and one in the night.

Soup for fever: boil 40 g (1.41 oz) of sorrel leaves, 20 g (0.70 oz) of lettuce and warts, 10 g (0.35 oz) of spinach and chard.
After cooling, add a pinch of salt and 20 g (0.70 oz) of butter.
It’s a recipe dating back to Renaissance.

Hawthorn for cardiopaths

Hawthorn is not difficult to find in the country or not too far from the city, where it forms sharp hedges. You can always find it at the herbalist’s. White flowers, like a bunch of small roses, grow and are gathered in spring. Red berries are gathered in autumn. The bark has a healing function too.
Flowers, fruits and bark are dried in the shadow and then used in treatments against insomnia, arteriosclerosis, nervous spasms, angina and obesity.
Hawthorn is a sedative par excellence; it’s prescribed to people suffering from restless sleep or heart diseases: it obviously acts on the heart in a much slower way than a traditional drug but, since it needs a longer treatment, it has more lasting effects.
It’s not toxic.
In the Middle Ages it was considered a remedy for urinary stones.

Infusion preparation: 2-3 pinches of flowers in a cup of boiling hot water. Cover and let it stand for 10 minutes. It’s excellent against spasms and circulatory disorders.

Decoction preparation: 2-3 parts of dried fruits boiled in 1 l of water for half an hour. It’s an effective treatment against diarrhoea.
Or prepare a decoction of ground bark, boiled in 1 litre of water for half an hour. Drink it against fever. To fight fever you can also use hawthorn decoction to have hand and foot baths.

Thyme, used as natural antibiotic, strengthens your body

To fight winter diseases you can follow this simple preventive treatment: add a pinch of thyme to your tea every morning.
By repeating this action till the end of the cold season, your body will strengthen thanks to this completely natural antibiotic.
You can also use it in cooking for stocks and sauces, but be careful to add it always at the end of the cooking to preserve its active principles.

Flu treatment and laxative remedy: elder properties

Flowers and fruits are the medicinal part of the plant. Fruits are gathered when they are well ripe, when they get an almost blackish colour since the reddish ones can be irritating.
Elder is believed to have diuretic, laxative, antinevralgic, antirheumatic and perspiratory properties.
In popular tradition, actually, elder is called “vegetable aspirin” for its perspiratory effect (flowers) and is used in hot teas to fight cold, flu and rheumatism.
Fruits are excellent anti-inflammatory remedies and are used for example to fight trigeminal neuralgia.

You must be careful not to confuse Sambucus Nigra with Sambucus Ebulus (Dwarf elder) since the latter has poisoning berries. It’s not difficult to distinguish them: dwarf elder has small leaves with two stipules at the base of the leaflets which are not present in Sambucus Nigra.

Elder flowers are also used in cooking to prepare fritters or a very delicate jam with its slightly laxative fruits, useful in case of constipation for elderly and babies.

Preparation

Perspiratory infusion (aspirin effect) for flu and cold: prepare an infusion using a spoon of dried elder flowers in a cup of boiling hot water. Drain and sweeten with honey. Drink it twice per day.

Laxative elder syrup: use the sieve to mash 1 kg of well ripe elderberries and let them stand one night in the fridge. Drain, weigh, add the same amount of sugar and boil for half an hour. Put into a bottle when it’s cold. It’s recommended as refreshing and laxative syrup, to take pure or diluted with water (one tbsp in a glass of water).

Heal the flu with onion: natural method

Natural method against the flu:
Here is the second onion-based recipe to heal the flu.
Let two thin sliced onions soak in half a litre of water.
Then have a glass of this “delicious” drink during meals and before going to sleep for 15 days.
The flu will be out!

Other recipes against flu

A remedy from Antilles against the flu

Since it’s a recipe coming from Antilles, it could only be based on rhum:
Put two inches of white rhum in a glass with a pinch of salt and some lemon juice. Let it warm in a bain-marie and drink in the night before going to sleep.
Obviously it has a very bad taste but the flu will magically disappear.

Flu treatment and the cold at early symptoms

At early symptoms: put 3 g (0.10 oz) of chamomile flowers in a cup. Pour 250 ml of boiling hot water and cover. Let infuse for 8 minutes, drain and drink 3 cups per day. To increase its effectiveness, add a spoon of cognac to this infusion.

As treatment: 10 g (0.35 oz) of rosemary, 10 g (0.35 oz) of sage leaves, 1 spoon of honey, 500 ml of white wine. Boil for 10 minutes in a bain-marie, drain and drink 50 g (1.76 oz) per day.

if you have cold too: one or two coffee spoons of laurel berries per day. Put directly into your mouth and swallow.
Or even: 10 g (0.35 oz) of eucalyptus leaves in a cup. Pour 200 ml of boiling hot water and let infuse for 15 minutes. Drain, sweeten with honey and drink two hot cups per day, in the morning and at night.

A remedy with mullein for the flu

The mullein or Verbascum emerges from a large rosette of oval leaves, and a tall stalk surrounded by flowers.
Pick the flowers that have just opened, throw away the cup and put them to dry under the sun covered with paper sheets. Keep them in a glass jar away from light.
In case of cold or flu an infusion could be very useful.
