Hawthorn for cardiopaths

Hawthorn is not difficult to find in the country or not too far from the city, where it forms sharp hedges. You can always find it at the herbalist’s. White flowers, like a bunch of small roses, grow and are gathered in spring. Red berries are gathered in autumn. The bark has a healing function too.
Flowers, fruits and bark are dried in the shadow and then used in treatments against insomnia, arteriosclerosis, nervous spasms, angina and obesity.
Hawthorn is a sedative par excellence; it’s prescribed to people suffering from restless sleep or heart diseases: it obviously acts on the heart in a much slower way than a traditional drug but, since it needs a longer treatment, it has more lasting effects.
It’s not toxic.
In the Middle Ages it was considered a remedy for urinary stones.

Infusion preparation: 2-3 pinches of flowers in a cup of boiling hot water. Cover and let it stand for 10 minutes. It’s excellent against spasms and circulatory disorders.

Decoction preparation: 2-3 parts of dried fruits boiled in 1 l of water for half an hour. It’s an effective treatment against diarrhoea.
Or prepare a decoction of ground bark, boiled in 1 litre of water for half an hour. Drink it against fever. To fight fever you can also use hawthorn decoction to have hand and foot baths.
